Officer Buckle and Gloria

Rathmann, Peggy. (1995) Officer Buckle and Gloria. New York: Penguin Young Readers Group

Officer Buckle and Gloria is a Caldecott Award Winning picture book that is geared towards young readers in kindergarten through second grade. The story focuses around Officer Buckle, a police officer in the town of Napville. Officer Buckle knows more about safety than anyone else in the town and he is always trying to share his tips, but no one ever listens. One day Officer Buckle decides to buy a police dog and names her Gloria. Gloria knows all about safety too, but the difference is everyone wants to listen to Gloria. Officer Buckle is sad that he is being upstaged and wants to quit giving safety tips, but Gloria talks him in to not giving up on what he loves the most. This is a fun and creative way to not only teach children basic safety tips but to also teach them that they should not give up on their dreams even when they are feeling discouraged.
