Say, Allen. (1993) Grandfather's Journey. New York: Houghton Mifflin
This is a Caldecott Award Winning picture book. This book is probably one of my favorite pictures books. Grandfather's Journey is a short picture book that tells a back and forth story of a family's travels between Japan and America. This is an excellent choice when teaching about other cultures and immigration. What starts the story is a young man's journey from Japan to America. While in America he gets homesick so he moves back to Japan and gets married. The trouble is that after a while he begins to miss America so he and his wife move back to America. When his daughter grows up she wants to see Japan so she and her family move to Japan. Eventually her children hear stories of their grandfather who live in America and they move to America. This is a beautifully illustrated story where most of the pictures appear to look like an old family photo album.
