Julie of the Wolves

This is one of the few books that I remember from elementary school. This is a unique story of an eskimo girl who goes by Julie at school but her eskimo name is Miyax. Because this story is set in an eskimo village many years ago Julie is an orphaned 13 year old who is married. This something that has to be explained to children, because they often do not understand. Julie is so unhappy that she runs away and finds herself stranded in the Alaskan Tundra. Julie begins to be accepted into the family of a pack of wolves and learns how to adapt and survive. There have been two sequels made to this book, both as stunning as the original. This is a great story to read in Literature circles because not only are students interested in Julie and her survival but there are many new concepts that the students learn from this book.
