This classic book won the Newbery Award in 1961 and has since been named one of the top 200 books for children. This is a wonderful book to use in whole class read alouds to increase comprehension because this is a story about family, strength, and independence. This is based off of the real life story of 10 year old girl named Karana who during the evacuation of her island jumped off ship to stay with her brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly after and Karana was left to fend for herself for eighteen years. She makes her own clothes and food, and learns how to survive in a world all by herself. This is a wonderfully engaging story that has had devoted readers for decades.
